This sculptural installation is a visual pun that juxtaposes concept with reality. While the form is delicate and soft conceptually, the stone is permanent and strong in reality. Balloons are one of the most recognizable icons for celebrations in modern times. They evoke memories of events such as City gatherings, family milestones, parades, special events and happy occasions. 3 highly polished granite balloons that appear as though they are floating around the sidewalks at Brunswick and the Third Avenue intersections. Each balloon sculpture will give the feeling of freedom and movement. Presented on the balloons are historical photos of the City of Prince George, viewed as reflections on the highly polished surface.
Each balloon is approximately 4’ high by 5-6’ long. The historical photos depicted by sand blasting will be approximately 18” high by30”Wide, Two images are placed on each balloon on opposite sides that will encourage the viewer to move around the artwork. Depicted on the balloons will also be the graphic for the celebration of Prince George’s 100th Anniversary. The “string” tied to each balloon (fabricated in stainless steel pipe) visually suggests the freedom and travel of the balloon. This flowing “string” will also add visual height to the sculpture, but have minimal interference for vehicle traffic. Granite from BC will be used, adding deep connections of the material to the sculptural concept and site area.
